Sunmyth you got me on this one ; I was about to post it on my H&H blog > http://huppeshyalites.blogspot.com/
Please feel free to link it, and tell me if I may link to your superb vault.
Dogon a.d used to be offered by Tim Berne's pages but was soon removed.

What a beutiful cover (there is also a black and white lp cover from some years later I believe)

I didn't know what this was - in fact never even heard of Hemphill, but I downloaded and listened and it's superb - really grooves ! It's great to discover unfamiliar artists (even dead ones !). Many thanks for the post

boromir, you may not recognise hemphill's name but i'm sure you have heard of the world saxophone quartet, of which jh was a founder member... the fact that you don't remember his name perhaps indicates how obstinately hemphill distanced himself from the "jazz publicity machine" in the 70s

this is interesting actually... and i'll tell you why! in the course of my researches into the texier (sage) tracklist, etc, i (re)discovered something i'd forgotten, which is the fact that the edition of jazz on 3 (22/4/05) which included the texier concert ALSO ran a feature on hemphill, paying special attention to his classic albums dogon a.d. and coon bid'ness..! that feature (or rather the musical extracts) made a huge impression on me, though apparently not on you... of course this may have been at least partly due to broadcaster kevin legendre who presented that segment - he can make any subject sound excruciatingly dull imo...

Don't know if anyone's still following this thread, but I'd just point out in response to Boromir that Hemphill also recorded with the Human Arts Ensemble with (amongst others) Lester Bowie, Hamiett Bluiett and the cellist on this rec, Abdul Wadud. I look forward to hearing this. H

Superb! Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for a copy of this for years...

A request: Do you have the Abdul Wadud solo cello album titled By Myself on Bishara? That's another rare one that I've been looking for.

Thanks again.

P.S. to my last comment:

To H&H and anyone else who may stumble in here. The original cover of Dogon A.D. is the black & white one on Julius Hemphill's own mbari laabel. The cover in fact only shows "Dogon A.D." and "mbari." It was years later that Arista/Freedom released the cover shown in this thread. Coon 'Biness includes the 4th track from this set, the Hard Blues.
